Rebuilding my confidence - Winston’s story

“If it wasn’t for the combined efforts of Vicky, Sam and the team, I would not have got the job! Better Working Futures gave me the push that I needed, and I would advise anyone who is unsure of joining that if you don’t try it, you will never know!”

Although Winston had previous work experience, he had been unemployed long term because of his medication for an existing health condition and his mental health had been impacted due to COVID-19. Winston’s job goal was to find work either at a local warehouse, cleaning, or in agriculture, but his priority was to address his health and wellbeing issues and to rebuild his confidence in preparation for a new career journey.

Winston attended weekly appointments with our Employment Adviser, Vicky, and together they worked on a plan which would provide targeted support based on Winston’s individual needs. He took part in several wellbeing sessions that focused on confidence building and mindfulness, which had a positive impact on Winston’s outlook of life and job prospects.

“It is evident to see how he has grown in confidence”, said Vicky.

Winston completed his supported job search with Vicky and attended our ‘Effective Job Search’ sessions which helped with the update of his CV and gave insight on what to include when completing job application forms. He attended a jobs fair at the Better Working Futures office, where he handed in his CV to multiple employers.

Vicky told us:

“Winston was a little anxious about finding the right employment, however, he attended several interviews, with encouragement from myself and the team, and although he was unsuccessful to begin with, this didn’t stop him!

“It was then that Winston began applying for more varied roles, and it wasn’t long until he was invited for another interview at a local warehouse, which he was offered a full-time job as a Warehouse Operative.

"We received very positive feedback from the employer on how Winston’s experiences would be beneficial to the team. Winston was so happy that he had finally gained employment.”
