Overcoming digital barriers – Alan’s story
When Alan was referred to Better Working Futures by his Work Coach, he was feeling financial pressures, which became even more concerning for him as we entered the current cost of living crisis. Alan also struggled with using computers which made searching for jobs online very difficult.
“I was desperate to get back into work”, said Alan, “as I was so used to being busy. I felt bored and demotivated.
“My Employment Adviser, Sarah, took the time to listen to me and the issues I faced, and found roles that fit my criteria. I was made to feel comfortable, and I felt motivated again.”
We supported Alan to improve his IT skills with one-to-one IT support as well as our in-house IT sessions. With guidance from Sarah, Alan completed several applications and was successful for a housing association job role, which he really had his hopes on due to his previous experience in property maintenance. Alan was fully prepared for his interview by Sarah, with practice runs on questions, answers and interview techniques which provided a boost in confidence for the day.
“I was fully supported with my transition into work, as Sarah covered my travel costs, until my first pay cheque came through. This was incredibly helpful with the cost-of-living crisis.
“I am very grateful for Sarah and the Better Working Futures team, for their support in securing my role at In Communities. It has given me motivation, hope and purpose in my life. I would recommend this programme to my friends and family as I got a job within seven weeks of being on the programme!”
