Growing confidence – Will’s story

When Will joined Better Working Futures, he had a portfolio of transferrable skills from his previous work experience in care, retail, and entertainment, however, he needed support in taking the next steps into a new career.

Will met with Employment Adviser, Mike, and together they explored various job sectors to gauge what jobs interested him most.

Mike shared: “There were a lot of jobs that Will found but didn’t want to apply for, as he felt he didn’t have right skills or experience. So, we focused on his existing transferrable skills to help widen his job search. After thorough discussions we were able to narrow down Will’s job goals to help tailor his support and activities.

“It was more about building Will’s confidence in preparation for finding the right job for him.”

Will engaged in regular interview preparation sessions with Mike and Employability Skills Trainer, Christine, to practice his interview skills, questions, and responses. He attended regular job clubs at Better Working Futures and made full use of the support on hand and the computers and printing facilities.

From this, Will built confidence on completing application forms and online job assessments. It was also a boost for his self-confidence and motivation to find work.

Mike told us: “Will secured several interviews for local retail roles and was soon offered a job!”

Prior to starting his new role, Will shared:

“I’m a bit nervous, but also very excited to start my role and face new challenges. My confidence and motivation have grown a lot since joining Better Working Futures. I want to give a massive thanks to Mike, Christine and the whole team for their support, it means more than you know!”
